Department of Student Life

The mission of the Department of Student Life at Itasca Community College is to assist the students in their journey to becoming responsible world citizens through co-curricular programs and activities that promote and develop college and community leadership.

Vision: Student Life on campus is an integral part of Itasca Community College. Student governance and leadership, community membership, and personal and social responsibility are all enlivened in the context of our residence halls, clubs and organizations, and enriching activities. Our students will be positioned to lead, influence, and contribute to their communities locally, nationally, and globally.

The Department of Student Life hosts many fun and informational events throughout the year.

Just for fun: Rock N Bowl (trip to the bowling alley); College Night at the Roller Rink; trip to the Pumpkin Patch, trip to Mt. Itasca for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing; Annual Spring Carnival; Welcome BBQ; and more!

To enhance student learning: Global Education Day, Black History Month, book clubs, guest speakers, and more!

All events are free for students. Make sure to follow us on social media and opt-in to texting to receive updates on events.

There's something for everyone! If you would like to start a new club, we can do that too. You can work with Kayley Schoonmaker to do this. You will need to come up with a constitution for your club and find a faculty or staff advisor. You must have at least 3 students interested to become a formal club.

Intramurals such as football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, dodgeball and softball are offered at Itasca. An intramural schedule supplements the intercollegiate athletic program and provides students with opportunities for participation in intramural activities. Students who are not involved in intercollegiate athletics are encouraged to participate in these programs.

For more information contact Kayley Schoonmaker or Weldon Braxton.

Values:

Leadership – We prepare our students for the leadership roles they will take on while at Itasca Community College and later in life. This is done through intentional learning, sound academic inquiry and active reflection. We provide opportunities to develop the leadership competencies that will allow students to create meaningful change in their communities.

Empowerment – We enable students to take an active role in influencing institutional, local, national and global matters. We empower them to advocate for themselves, their community and the rights of others.

Integrated Learning – Learning is a transformative process that integrates knowledge and experience both inside and outside of the classroom. We facilitate faculty-student engagement, encourage experiential learning, cultivate the arts, and embrace new technology.

Equity and Inclusion – Student learning occurs best in communities that value equity, diversity, and inclusion. We strive to create and support an inclusive environment that encourages civility, compassion, discussion, debate, understanding, and expression where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

Goals:

  • Enrich the total student experience, with a specific focus on opportunities outside of the classroom that enhances student learning.
  • Champion diversity, community, and the celebration of traditions that promotes an inclusive environment.
  • Challenge and empower students to be responsible citizens who will contribute to their communities and profession through leadership and service.
  • Prepare and engage students to lead, learn, and live in a global society.
