Head wrestling Coach Joseph Umlauf is a graduate of North Dakota State University where he was a four year scholarship starting wrestler for Bison. The NDSU program is a Big 12 Conference wrestling team.
In high school, Umlauf was a two-time Wisconsin state finalist and a four-time state qualifier. He was a multiple-time Border War, Pre-Season nationals, and Cheesehead national champion and place winner. He is in a small group of wrestlers to ever mark an undefeated Clash National Duals tournament record in Rochester, Minn.
Umlauf graduated from NDSU with a double major in Physical Education and Health Education and a minor in Psychology. He is currently a Physical Ed and Health Teacher at Greenway High School in Coleraine, Minnesota. He is receiving his elite trainer license from International Sports Science Association with certificates in Personal Training, Sports Nutrition, and Strength & Conditioning. He is a certified NFHS coach who over 12 certificates in coaching. At NDSU, he took over 12 credits of courses in coaching.
Coach Umlauf is always bringing a positive upbeat atmosphere to the room. He brings the Division I intensity to a room, but develops a culture and atmosphere of learning, growth, and development of the individual athletes as wrestlers, students, and in life. Coach Popp
Head assistant wrestling coach, Charley Popp of Crystal Lake, Illinois is a graduate from North Dakota State University. Coach Popp was a college starter from 165-197 for the Big 12 Conference Bison wrestling team. “Coach Popp brings such great energy to the team. He not only wrestles with our upper weights every day giving them the Division I look most of them want, but he knows the high level technique for each individual. He fully embodies our philosophy of coaching the individual athlete to their own strengths and style,” Coach Umlauf said about Charley.
Coach received his bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in sociology and a minor in wellness. Coach Popp wrestled for Prairie Ridge High School in Illinois. Coach’s experience coaching comes from four years at the high school club level in Fargo, ND and one year of experience at the club level in Illinois.
Coach Popp brings such great energy to the team. Coach Reetz is a former Itasca Wrestling standout who was a 2x National Qualifier and 2x National Qualifying ‘round of 12’ wrestler at 133 pounds for the Vikings. Tanner was a 2x MCAC Champion and 2x national qualifier champion.
While in High School, Coach Reetz graduated from standout Minnesota program, Frazee High School. While at Frazee Coach Reetz was a State champion, 3x state finalist, and 5x state qualifier.
Coach Reetz has some of the best scrambling and top wrestling in the country. He was a super successful wrestler for us at Itasca and gives our smaller weights the looks they need to go against the best guys in the country. --Coach Umlauf
Coach Reynolds is the team’s heavyweight coach. Devin was a State runner-up for Cloquet High School (Duluth, MN). Coach Reynolds went on to be a national qualifier for the Itasca Viking wrestling team last year.
Having a heavyweight coach in the room who has great experience at the junior college level is amazing to have on board. Devin is a freakishly athletic, true heavyweight size, who can give our heavyweights the looks they need to be successful. --Coach Popp
Team nutritionist and dietitian consultant Daeshaundra is a Licensed Registered Dietitian (LRD) in the Itasca area. In the past Ms. Wadsworth was a dietitian consultant for Division One program, North Dakota State University. While attending NDSU, Daeshaundra was the team head manager and received her Dietetics degree. She has been around the sport of wrestling for over a decade.
Itasca wrestlers receive seminars and consultation on diet plans for their individual needs. Itasca Community College wrestling is so blessed to have someone like Daeshaundra Wadsworth apart of their staff.
Dayo is such an instrumental key to our program and our athletes. To have the opportunity for our athletes to have a licensed dietitian who knows the world of wrestling at their disposal is such a leg up from other programs, --Head Coach Joe Umlauf

Volunteer assistant coach Roy Umlauf is also is the assistant team recruiter traveling to tournaments and duals all over the midwest and country scouting the talent that fits Itasca’s team philosophy and culture.
Coach Umlauf was a Division 3 college national qualifier for Cornell College. Coach is a current Wisconsin high school referee who has coached all ages from youth to college athletes for over 30 years. Coach Umlauf is also a retired police officer of 25+ years.
Not only does Coach know what high-level wrestlers look like, but he knows how to look for student-athletes with the morals and work ethic needed to be successful at the college level and in life.
