Head wrestling Coach Joseph Umlauf is entering his third year as the head wrestling coach of Itasca Community College. Umlauf is a graduate of North Dakota State University where he was a four-year scholarship starting wrestler for the Bison. The NDSU program is a Big 12 Conference wrestling team. He is currently pursuing finishing his master’s degree in sport management with an emphasis on high-performance coaching from the number one rated sports management program in the country, the University of Florida.

Head Coach Umlauf is also a Personal Training certified elite trainer from the International Sports Sciences Association in Personal Training, Sports Nutrition, and Strength & Conditioning. In high school, Umlauf was a two-time Wisconsin state finalist and a four-time state qualifier. He was a multiple-time Border War, Pre-Season nationals, and Cheesehead national champion and place winner. He is in a small group of wrestlers to ever mark an undefeated Clash National Duals tournament record in Rochester, Minn.

Umlauf graduated from NDSU with a double major in Physical Education and Health Education and a minor in Psychology and certification in coaching. He is currently a department head of Physical and Health education while also teaching. He also does freelance personal training and nutrition consulting.

Umlauf’s coaching philosophy is “Creating Champions of Life”, where the focus is on the development of the whole individual for success on and off the mat.

Coach Moreno brings such great energy to the team but also is all hands on deck for all the behind-the-scenes things that make a team successful. He has the passion and desire to help all student-athletes here at ICC be as successful as possible. He not only wrestles with our upper weights giving them the looks of what it takes to be successful at the college level and will direct upper-weight operations, but also will direct academic support, social media, marketing, program development, and other facets of the Itasca wrestling program. At the end of the day, he fully embodies the philosophy of our program looking to help each individual be as successful as possible on and off the mat.
