Water Quality Lab

Students on boat testing lake waterThe Itasca Community College Water Quality Lab was started in partnership with the Itasca Water Legacy Partnership (IWLP) and the Iowa State University Limnology Laboratory directed by Dr. John Downing.  The Water Quality Lab’s mission has two main focuses:

  1. Educate ICC students
  2. Serve the Itasca County community.

In order to help achieve these goals, the Water Quality Lab has become a Minnesota state certified lab in several critical analytes. Being a state certified lab not only requires a higher level of attention to detail and much stricter regulations, it also allows the lab to provide opportunities that would not otherwise be available, like working on studies on area lakes and well testing within the community.

The lab has been able to work on several very large studies and be partners in those studies with organizations like the Itasca Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD). These projects give ICC students the opportunity to work right alongside professionals from organizations like SWCD as well as providing students with the experience of working on something where the results go beyond them and the classroom. What they work on has an impact on the Itasca County community.
