Responsibilities of Students and Counselors

Effective advising is the foundation for academic success. It assumes a good working relationship between advisors and students. For this to happen, both parties must understand their responsibilities and functions.

Student Responsibilities Counselor Responsibilities
Meet regularly with your advisor well in advance of the registration period. Use counselor's suggestions to develop your class schedule. Suggests appropriate courses, approves registration and drop/add forms.
Evaluate your academic performance on a regular basis and identify factors that affect it, positively or negatively. Assists you in assuming increasing responsibility and helps you evaluate your own academic progress. Your advisor will know what requirements you lack and have an idea of what courses you need to take.
Develop a sense of purpose in terms of a major and possible career. Meet with your counselor to do some long-range planning. Knows the college's policies and provides you with accurate and specific information.
Accept full responsibility for your academic success and acknowledge that your advisor can help you achieve that success. Helps you develop long-term goals by evaluating job and career opportunities. Your advisor can help you select a four-year college for transfer.
Be aware of deadlines for adding and dropping courses, bailout, withdrawal, incompletes (I's) and completing an application to graduate. Maintains accurate records and helps monitor your progress.
Keep appointments, come with questions, be punctual or call to cancel or reschedule if necessary. Keeps appointments or calls to cancel and reschedule if necessary. Offers suggestions but does not dictate what you should do.
