For twenty years, ICC Engineering has worked hard to "change the face" of engineering education at our college. We've always believed that anyone who wants to become an engineer should have that opportunity, in a comfortable, welcoming environment.
We've introduced programs to bring more young women into our Learning Community. We've worked closely with regional Native American leaders. Many first-generation college students have graduated and become successful professionals. And now, we're recruiting African-American students to our engineering program in much greater numbers, through our BET (Black Engineers of Tomorrow) Program.
We've secured four years of grant funding from the Blandin Foundation in Grand Rapids to get the BET Program started. This webpage has many resources to help you learn about the BET Program, and should answer a lot of your questions. As always, if you need more details, call or email Ron Ulseth, Director of Engineering, any time.
Mentoring
Even though we keep class sizes small and our faculty are hands-on and available, we believe that mentors are vital to your success as an engineering student. BET students are paired one-on-one with African-Americans who are working right now as professional engineers and scientists.
They've been where you are. They've experienced the hard work and responsibility it takes to complete your education. They're there to help you every step of the way, and to provide an "outside" opinion. Being part of a mentoring team is a privilege few students get before they enter graduate studies, so use this resource to its limits.

Learning Community
You hear us talking a lot about our "Learning Community" at ICC. It's actually an entire philosophy, and everything we do in our Engineering Program starts from that base. Read detailed information about our Learning Community and other terms we educators use by clicking here.
Degree Overview
You've heard the speeches about how engineering is a great career, and you'll probably make a lot of money and change the world a little. You're also wondering what you'll study in your first two years at ICC. Will it be interesting? Hard? Just what?
You study physics, chemistry, math, and applications of knowledge. You also study the career of engineering: how you'll make money and change the world. By the time you graduate with your AS degree and transfer to the university of your choice, you know what you're most interested in--and why.

Housing
All BET students reside in our brand-new Engineering dorms as part of the scholarship award. You sleep and eat on-campus, but the dorms are only a few steps away from lab, classroom and study spaces.
We've done more than provide our students with a comfortable, safe place to live while they go to college. Dorm life at ICC is an integrated part of the Learning Community. More details are available by clicking here.
Connecting With Your New Community
The Black Engineers of Tomorrow project is a continuation of ICC's efforts to increase the number of "underrepresented minorities" in engineering. We've had great success with the women, Anishinabe, first-generation college students, etc. who enter and graduate from our program.
We have a unique opportunity with African-American students. You will change the face of ICC Engineering, and make our program better for all students who follow, black or white. We've put a great deal of thought into how to welcome you into our Learning Community, and ask that you teach us as we go along.
Please download our brochure, "Connecting With Your New Community," available by clicking here. Then talk to us about the ideas presented there. We look forward to hearing from you.
ScholarshipsWhat if you could get your first two years of college
for free? The BET Scholarship completely covers tuition, books, and
on-campus room and board for all BET students. You still need spending
money, but everything else is provided.
Including transportation home during school breaks. No
matter where you come from, you're reimbursed for travel home when you
receive a BET award. And, if there's an emergency during the semester,
we'll see that you get home and back, on us.
